    • Pieter Cornelisz Luyster emigrated to America in 1656. He was descended from a very reputable Dutch family, who had long been residents of Holland and the Rhineland, some of whom had been distinguished citizens of Cologne. Pieter Cornelisz Luyster soon acquired property in Newtown (early name for New York) and being a carpenter by trade, he erected a grist mill at Fish's Point. He was twice married, his first wife being Aeltje Tyssen. He married his second wife, Jannetie, daughter of Jan Snediker, in 1670. The Luysters were listed as members of the Flatlands Church in 1677. Pieter Cornelisz was magistrate of Flatlands in 1660, 1661, 1662, and 1664. He was a resident of Flatbush in 1683. He died in 1695, and his widow Jannetie, in 1713. For years there was an island off Long Island known as Luyster's Island.

      [p. 358] Pieter Cornelisz Luyster soon after 1656 acquired property in Newtown and being a carpenter built a grist mill at Fish’s Point. He lived in Kings Co. and with wife Jannetje, daughter of Jan Snediker was member of Flatlands Church. Eventually moved to Newtown & bought ‘Poor’s farm from the Dutch Church. He died 1695 & his widow died about 1713.

      Jan, the common ancestor of the family, came to this country as early as 1642; was a shoemaker by trade; m. 1st Annetje Buys of Rys or Ryssen, a town in the province of Overyssel; m. 2nd Egbertje or Lybertje Jans wid. of Herman Hendrickse; d. in 1679. Settled at first in N. A., where he kept a taphouse or tavern, and was afterwards among the first settlers of Flh, where he was a mag. from 1654 to 1664; a mem. of the R. D. ch. in 1677; and on the patent of said town of 1652, as per p. 13 of Strong's Flh, and that of the new lotts of 1667.* Will da. Dec. 12, 1670, in which he [p. 268] devised his lands to his s.
