REM JANSEN VAN DER BEECK, blacksmith, emigrated from leveren in the Netherlands, d. 1681; m., Dec. 21, 1642, Jannetje Rapali, dau. of George and Catalyntje Trico, b. Aug. 18, 1629. He was in New Amsterdam, 1643 to ’5 1 '. in Beverwyck (Albany), 1655 to ’6o, at the Waleboght, in which place he owned several houses and lots. In 1663 he was complained of by Adriaen Hegeman for carrying off a ploughshare. Was ordered by the court to replace it in the spot where he found it, and if he had any claim to prosecute it at law (see vol. 6, page 5, Records of New Amsterdam). Joris Jansen, the common ancestor of the family, emigrated in 1623; m. Catalyntje dau. of Joris Trico of Paris; d. about 1665. Resided at first in Albany, where his dau. Sarah was born, and not in Brn as asserted by some writers, then in N. A. and finally on his plantation at the Wallabout in Brn of 167 morgens, for which he obtained a patent June 16, 1637. Was one of the 12 men representing the N. N. in 1641, and mag. of Brn in 1655, '56, '57, '60, and '62. Some writers prefix a De to his surname as to make it De Rapalie, but the compiler has seen no conclusive evidence to justify it, nor as he found among the public and private records of this vicinity or elsewhere an instance where either Joris Jansen or any of his descendants have made use of said prefix. Rem Jansen Vanderbeeck, the common ancestor of the Remsen family, emigrated from Ieveren in Westphalia; by another account, from Coevorden in Drenthe in the Netherlands. His descendants dropped the family name of Vanderbeeck, and, as was the custom at the time, assumed that of Remsen, or sons of Rem. He m. Dec. 21, 1642, Jannetje dau. of Jores Jansen Rapalie; d. in 1681. Was a blachsmith by trade, residing for some time at Albany, were several of his children were born, and where he was nominated for commissaris in 1655, and sold his house and lot in 1660. He obtained a plantation at the Wallabout adjoining that of his father-in-law prior to 1643, on which he finally settled. Issue:– Annetie Remsen, bp. On ass. rolls of Flh of 1675 and '83, took the oath of allegiance there as a native in 1687, on patent of 1685, cen. of 1698, and capt. of infantry in 1700, as per p. 809 of Vol. IV. of Doc. of Col.
