    • Pieter Jans DeWit was a well respected educated man who spoke several languages, and was appointed to assist the French Huguenots in setting up the village of Boswyck.
Pieter Jans DeWit was one of the few who, in that era, used an identifier after his given name - Pieter Janson. The 'de Wit' means 'the white one' likely for his hair color of blond. Other times, an identifier was used only in court records when more than one person was in the area with the same given name.
