  • Notes

    • The July 1915 issue of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register (Vol. LXIX Whole Number 275) contains (between pages 242 and 243) illustrations showing two sides of a leaf that probably at one time formed part of a Bible belonging to Capt. John Gorham who married Desire Howland. Pages 242-243 describe the basis for this conclusion and go on to quote from the remnant, including the names and dates of birth of John and Desire Gorham's children.

He immigrated in June 1635 perhaps on the PHILIP.

Col. John Gorham, recorded in his "Wast Book" that John Gorham went home to England about this time but returned soon to his family. They moved from Marshfield to Yarmouth in 1652 and then; the Wast Book states, they moved to Barnstable to begin a township called Barnstable. We know that Gorham did have a grist mill and a tannery there. He was surveyor of highways in 1654 In Oct. 1675 Capt. John Gorham was in command of a Company of English and Indians at Swamp Naraganset (in King Philips War ) where in Feb.1676 he was mortally wounded when his powder horn was hit and split against his side, driving pieces of horn and powder into his body. He died at Swansey on Feb. 5, 1676.

3 sources about Totoo, enslaved by Desire Howland Gorham:

      1. “Old Cape Cod: The Land, the Men, the Sea," Mary Rogers Bangs (1920): p 103-104.

“That the Cape people, in parsonage or farm, followed the custom of the day and kept slaves is evidenced, among other ways, by many wills. Mr. Bacon, of Barnstable, for instance, directs that in case his negro Dinah be sold, "all she is sold for be improved by my executors in buying Bibles, which are to be distributed among his grandchildren. Mr. Walley had his slaves; the Reverend Mr. Avery, of Truro, whose farm and forge were near Highland Light, was able to bequeath a considerable estate to his children; and among the assets were his negro "girl named Phillis, his Indian girl named Sarah, and the negroes Jack and Hope who were never to be sold out of the family. Old Totoo, slave to Mrs. Gorham, of Barnstable, survived her eight years and, dying, begged that he might be buried at his mistress's feet. In 1678, two Indians of Sandwich, convicted of stealing twenty five pounds, were sentenced to be sold, for the profit of their victims, somewhere in New England as 'perpetual slaves.'"

      2. “The Gorham Family: Descendants of Ephraim Gorham (1753-1830)," Gerald Parsons and Louis Hagen 1955): entry 1.

Of the early life of John Gorham little is known. He had a good common school education, was brought up in the Puritan faith, and during his life was a consistant [sic] and exemplary Christian. His wife, Desire Howland, also had been educated in the Puritan faith, and during her long life was a pattern of good works, a kind-hearted woman, and a Christian in name and spirit. A beautiful tribute to the memory of Mrs. Gorham is found in the will of her servant Totoo. His dying request was "Bury me as near as you can to the feet of my mistress." There is true poetic feeling in the simple words of the dying servant."

      3. “Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families” (vols 1-2), Amos Otis (1888-1890): p 409

“Sometimes a trifling incident affords an excellent and suggestive illustration of character. A beautiful tribute to the memory of Mrs Gorham is found in the will of her servant Totoo. His dying request was, ‘Bury me as near you can to the feet of my mistress.’ There is true poetic feeling in the simple words of the dying servant. They are suggestive of a thousand acts of kindness that had lived in his memory during the 8 years that his mistress had been dead, and he craved no higher felicity in the spirit world than to be allowed to dwell near her whom he served on earth.”

[The English were ashamed enough by slavery that they euphemistically referred to slaves as servants, but not so ashamed that they stopped buying and selling people. Slaves are in 17th-century wills as property; they don't have wills of their own. Though clearly intended to get a nice Christian woman off the hook for enslaving someone (and apparently not freeing him upon her death), the anecdote preserves the power relationship between the two: the slave wants to "be allowed" to spend eternity as "near" as he can to her "feet." It's an anecdote I'll use in class the next time I teach Colonial American Lit.]

      4. Who was Totoo? As printed in the "Mayflower Descendant," Howland's inventory references a person named "tota" in her household: "beding & sheets that tota makes use of" (p 219). The index identifies Tota as an "indian" (p 279). As Bangs notes in the passage quoted above, the English captured and enslaved Americans. See "New England Bound: Slavery and Colonization in Early America," Wendy Warren (Pulitzer Finalist, 2017).

If Totoo/Tota is enslaved in 1675-76, then s/he is almost surely 1 of the hundreds of Wampanoag the English sold into slavery at the end of Metacom's War (King Philip's War).

Gustavus Aldolphus Hinckley (1822-1905) transcribed the early vital and town records, as well as the records from the Barnstable County Probate Court that dealt with residents of the town of Barnstable. In addition to Hinckley's transcription, the Barnstable Vital Records were also transcribed and published by George Bowman in a series of 36 articles in The Mayflower Descendant, beginning in 1900 (Vol. 2, p. 212) and continuing through 1937 (Vol. 34, p. 115)
The current presentation of the material was created by abstracting Bowman's transcriptions in their entirety, and comparing them with the Hinckley transcriptions. This method has allowed both authors footnotes to be incorporated. Hinckley's annotations are enclosed in brackets and italicized. Bowman's footnotes are enclosed in brackets, and these notes are not italicized.
