- U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1806 and was the first lawyer to open a legal practice in Norwich, New York. He was surrogate for Chenango County, New York, in 1811. In 1815, he was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress, serving until 1817. After leaving Congress, he was a member of the New York State Assembly i n 1827 and one of the incorporates of the Bank of Chenango. Relocating to Michigan, in 1839, he practiced law until his death at age 73.
