- Joseph was a member of the Society of the Friends who resided with his family at Braintree until 1664 when they moved to Mendon, Massachusetts Bay Colony. On February 15,1681 he sold his farm in Mendon to Edward Linchford of Braintree and moved to Providence, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations by 1682. There he was chosen to be the sealer of weights and measures.
