    • Richard was very involved in local governance and was a Captain of the m ilitia when he served in King William's War in 1697. He was in the Uppe r House as Governor's Assistant for several years, and served as Deputy t o Rhode Island General Assembly in 1671,1676, 1679-1681, 1696, 1698, 17 00-02, 1805, and 1807-08. He served as Speaker of the House of Deputies i n 1707-08, and Member of the Providence Town Council in 1700-01.

      He built a sawmill in Woonsocket, Rhode Island in 1680 and, in 1700 bui lt one in Providence on the Woonasquatucket River, five miles above the s alt water harbor.

      On 24 Oct 1666 Richard and Mary fined 40s each for fornication by the G eneral Court of Trials in Newport. [RICR 11:51
