Notes - Donald was born to Benjamin and his second wife, Esmarelda Smith. Esmarelda was the sister of Benjamin's first wife, Mary M. Smith. He was raised in Sonoma on a prune-farm ranch. While young he was close friends with the children of Don Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.
Don Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo was a Californio general, statesman, and public figure. He was born a subject of Spain, performed his military duties as an officer of the Republic of Mexico, and shaped the transition of Alta California from a territory of Mexico to the U.S. state of California.
Donald L. Campbell graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1916 with a BA in Agriculture. He was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity
He spent 1917-18 in Europe during WWI, serving with the First Ambulance unit of the University of California and later was transferred to Paris, where he was chief of Transportation in the Red Cross. Donald returned from Europe in 1919, departing from Le Havre in 1919 on board the SS France.
His draft registration card lists his address as 2520 Durant, Berkeley, Ca. with his trade listed as agriculturist.
Donald and Jane Bangs announced their engagement as soon as he returned from Europe.
