June 22, A° 1654, New Amst.

McCracken continues Allabens work on publishing trusted documentary data about the Rapalje and Trico families and corrects misconceptions about the family. Don't miss the huge list of notes which include observations about the quality of sources.
A small correction was made later that is worth noting here for those reading the article online. The correction is available in volume 37 and is online here: https://archive.org/details/sim_american-genealogist_1961-01_37_1/page/44/mode/2up?q=Rapalje

While on the surface, this might look like any other family history, this is the exception that would encourage one to go deeper. Allaben has built a richly sourced essay on the family as a part of building the ancestry of Leander Crall that goes into not just the standard pedigree but deals with various mistakes made by genealogies past (including Holgate and Fernald), as well as other reads that aren't quite hitting the mark either. Each person has original data sourced, right down to translating Native American deeds in the appendix (don't skip it!).
Its hard to underestimate just how important that this early essay on the family is to the history of the Rapalje family (or de Rapalje family, as it may be).

"This is the story of the great exodus of the Huguenots from France at the end of the seventeenth century, and of their dispersal to places in Europe, the United States, Canada, and South Africa. It traces their migrations through Europe and across the Atlantic to Canada and the United States, providing startling insights into the origins of many of our earliest colonial settlers. Over half of the book is devoted to the Huguenots and their direct descendants in Canada and the United States, dealing with those who settled in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and New England. An Appendix has the names of hundreds of Huguenot immigrants with dates and places of their arrival; there are short biographical sketches with genealogical data, a list of English surnames of French derivation, additions and corrections by Milton Rubincam, and an index of names and places other than those mentioned in the genealogies and appendices."

George is mentioned in many pages of this book, unfortunately with his name in multiple forms. Unknown-c. 1665
Joris Jansen de Rapelje, a Huguenot who had fled to Leiden from Valenciennes, was one of New Netherland’s first settlers. A weaver by trade, he arrived in 1625 with Adriaen Jorisz Thienpont, an employee of the West India Company who had been directed to establish a settlement at the trading post of Fort Orange (now Albany, NY).
In 1636, following the murder of the Commissar (Commander) of Fort Orange by the Mohawks, Director Pieter Minuit ordered all the colonists in the outlying settlements to move to Manhattan. Joris Jansen de Rapelje set up an inn on Pearl Street, adjoining the old Fort. He was also a boatswain, involved in the capture of ships for prize.
On June 16, 1637, Joris de Rapelje purchased a 335-acre bowery near Wallabout in Brooklyn from the Native Americans. The estate included a considerable waterfront on the Bay, and lay along the stream known by its Indian name of Rinnegakonck.
In 1641, de Rapelje was selected as a member of the Twelve Men. By 1655, he had become a permanent resident of Long Island, and was appointed by the Council of New Amsterdam as one of the Schepens (Magistrates) of Breukelen (Brooklyn), an office that he also held in 1656, 1657 and 1660.
Joris Jansen de Rapelje died around 1665. Brooklyn’s Rapelye Street is named for the family.

Joris Jansen Rapelje (28 April 1604 – 21 February 1662/63) was a member of the Council of Twelve Men in the Dutch West India Company colony of New Netherland. He and his wife Catalina (Catalyntje) Trico (1605–1689) were among the earliest settlers in New Netherland. Joris Rapelje and Catalina Trico were married 21 January 1624, at the Walloon Church of Amsterdam. Four days later, on 25 January, the couple departed from Amsterdam, bound for North America. In 1641, Rapalje was one of the Council of Twelve Men representing Manhattan, Breukelen and Pavonia. From 1655 through 1660, he was a magistrate of Brooklyn. Joris Jansen Rapelje and Catalina Trico were the parents of 11 children
