    • From "Nantucket Lands and Land Owners" pg. 11;
      John Swaind bought out all of the Indian claims to Quaize Point in Aug 1686, but was unable to obtain a grant of confimration. Onaccount of the inconvenience of obtaining a confirmation of purchases made from the Indians, it was concluded best to obtain a general grant of the entire island, which was the Dongan Patent, dated June 27, 1687. (can be found at the Registry of Deeds at Nantucket). It established John Gardner, James Coffin, William Gayer, Peter Coffin, nathaniel Bernard, Stephen Hussey and John Macy a body corporate called the Trustees of the Freeholders of the Town of Sherburne.
