Joseph Allston is the son of William Allston (1698 - 1744) and Esther (La Brosse de Marboeuf) Allston (1704 - 1781).
His father was born in what was part of the Province of Carolina, and then Berkeley County, South Carolina and is now Georgetown, South Carolina. The name of the family plantation was "The Oaks."
Joseph married Charlotte Rothmahler, born March 22, 1735, the daughter of Job Rothmahler and Anne (Dubosc) Rothmahler.
Their descendants use both the names ALLSTON and ALSTON
