- Jan Van Loon was born in Leige, then the Netherlands, now Belgium. He came to America about 1675, arriving in New York (then New Amsterdam). On Nov. 24, 1675 the Minutes of the Common Council of New York City state that he took the oath of allegia nce to the King of Great Britain on Jan 16, 1676 were entered his plans to Marry Marritje Alberts, and on Feb. 23, 1676 they were married in New York.
