      In 1637 Captain Stegg(e) was a merchant trading on the James River. He w a s a s p e a ker of the Assembly in 1643, and in 1644, a member of the Cou n cil . I n 1 6 51, he was sent to America by the English crown to subdue th e c o l o n ies of Maryland and Virginia. As he was returning to England af te r d o i n g so, he was lost at sea on the passage from Virginia to Englan d . H e l e f t his estate in Virginia to his son Thomas Stegg(e), who settl e d i n H e n rico Co unty. He left his houses in London, England to his d a u ght e r G race Byrd.
