Parley P Pratt came to New York preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Abraham said this new gospel was like a light in the darkness and he thought that everyone who heard it would see the beauty of it. But his wife felt differently. At first she fought it with all her energy. Shortly after he was baptized into the church, Brother Pratt was holding a meeting one evening when a messenger arrived telling Brother Washburn that his wife had fainted. As he arose to leave the room, Brother Pratt said, “Brother Washburn, be not alarmed about your wife. I promise you, in the name of the Lord, that she will soon be a member of this church.” In a few weeks she was baptized.

William Black: To my understanding at that time that meant plural marriage. I accepted it. I met a young lady of good family that pleased me and I pleased her. I told her of my wife and two children and of my desires to go and bring them to Utah. With this understanding and information she was willing to marry me and in February 1851 I married Amy Jane Washburn, Patriarch Isaac Morley performing the ceremony
LifeSketch Emma Jane "Amy" was born in New York into the prosperous well respected Quaker family of Abraham and Tamer Washburn. When she was six years old Parley P. Pratt brought the LDS gospel message to her family. The next year her family was living in Nauvoo, the Beautiful, where she enjoyed this happy peaceful place. Trouble marred her memories as the angry mobs ended serenity of their community, killed the Prophet and his brother, and caused the Saints to migrate even further west. Amy\'s father was called to go to Winter Quarters to help establish a way station for all the migrating saints. While there, Amy watched as shelters were built, crops were planted and harvested, and thousands of Saints headed out on the long trek to the Salt Lake Valley. It was two years later, in 1849, when the Washburn\'s made the journey west. Upon arrival in the Valley, Amy went with her family to settle Manti. Their company arrived in late November and immediately faced winter storms. They quickly found shelter by digging out the sides of hills. These dugouts were their homes for the severe winter. When spring came their dugout homes were invaded by rattle snakes. The settlers had to abandon this spot and build their community further south. Amy was a part of making a home on the frontier, enduring Indian troubles, drought, storms, and wild animals. She met William Black and became his second wife in February, 1851. They made their first home in Manti where two children were born to them. William moved his family to Nephi, where two more children were born to Amy. When they moved to Ephraim, another two children were born to their household. Her last three children were all born in Beaver, Utah. She had a total of nine children. All children grew to adulthood. Amy\'s health, however, was not good. She was ill a great part of her life. She suffered many strokes, three of them quite severe. The last one was fatal and caused her death at age fifty six. For five years (1854-1860) I stayed at the mill at Salt Creek (Nephi) and was greatly prospered, as the settlement grew the grists increased. There was little money in circulation; hence I received a heavy percent of my wages in wheat. In 1858 Johnson’s Army came in and Camp Floyd was established. My wheat was turned to gold with a liberal profit.
