H e w as a direct male line descendant of Alexander Stewart, 4th Hig h S t e w a rd of Scotland, through his second son Sir John Stewart of Bonki ll , w h o w a s killed at the Battle of Falkirk. His mother was also a desc e nd a n t o f Robert I of Scotland through his second marriage to Elizabeth d e B u r g h .
