    • She had been promised to Strongbow by her father who had visited Englan d t o a s k f o r an invasion army. He was not allowed to give his daughter a w ay , a s u n der Early Irish Law Aoife had the choice of whom she married, b u t s h e h a d to agree to an arranged marriage.

      Under Anglo-Norman law, this gave Strongbow succession rights to the Ki n g d o m o f Leinster. Under Irish Brehon law, the marriage gave her a life i n t e r e st only, after which any land would normally revert to male cousin s ; b u t B r ehon law also recognized a transfer of "swordland" following a c o n q u e st. Aoife conducted battles on behalf of her husband and is someti m e s k n o wn as Red Eva (Irish: Aoife Rua).
