  Robert was the only son of Robert, second earl of Leicester, and Amice ( d a u g h ter of Ralph de Gael). He was born after a number of elder sister s . H e i n h erited from his father large estates in England and Normandy. After 1154 he seems to have spent much of his time in charge of the Lei c e s t e r lands in Normandy. By 1159 he had received from the king the mar r i a g e o f Petronilla, daughter & heir of William de Grandmesnil. The se a l h e u s e d before his father's death demonstrates that he had taken the s u r n a m e de Breteuil. This has some significance in that it reveals him s t r e s s ing his descent from William fitz Osbern.
