• Notes

  Roger completed the building of the Castle of Berkeley. He suffered muc h i n t h e w a rs between Stephen and the Empress Maud, at the hands of Wal te r, s o n o f M iles, Earl of Hereford. He was deprived of the Manor of Be r kel e y , a bout 1152, apparently for refusing to recognise the authority o f e i t h e r party, though he was soon afterwards restored to the Honour Of D u r s l e y (c).
