    • King James I of Aragon called 'The Conqueror' was the son of King Pedro I I a n d b o r n in Montpellier, France on Feb 1 1207 . He succeeded his fat he r a s k i n g in 1213 at age six. Sixteen years later James began his co n qu es t o f t he Balearic Islands, gaining full control in 1235. After a t h r e e - y ear campaign, he captured the Moorish controlled city of Valenci a . H e c o n cluded a code of laws in 1247 and ended the territorial dispu t es b e t w een Aragon and France with the treaty of Corbeil with King Loui s I X i n 1 2 5 8 . He spent the rest of his life dedicated to expelling th e m oors f r o m t he Spanish peninsula . Upon his death he divided his king do m bet w e e n his two sons, which ul timately led to conflict.
