    • The Clare Family of English nobles was prominent in the 12th and 13th c e n t u r ies. The first earl of Clare, the founder of the family, was Richa r d F i t z gilbert, a knight who accompanied William the Conqueror on the N o r m a n i nvasion of England in 1066.
