      Richard served in Revolutionary War under Captain Daniel Smith and under Lt William Edmondson, Dunsmore's War. Military Service 1777, Montgomery Co., VA, Militia under Captains’ Newell and Love, 1777-1790. Under Captain Love, on Sept. 7, 1780, he participated in the Battle of Kings Mountain.       After his military service, Richard and family moved to Hawkins and Claiborne Counties,TN. Records of this family are found in the records of the Big Spring Baptist Church, located at Springdale, four miles southeast of Tazewell, TN, in Claiborne Co. The records show "Richard and Eliabeth Bird moved their letter there June 2 1802, the Church met and agreed to hold Church meeting at Richard Bird's on War Creek on the 4th Sunday June 2, 1802. There is a record of Richard and Elizabeth's 11 children in the Church Records. Oldest son William became a Baptist minister. Richard's will, dated and signed 5 March 1803, in Hawkins Co., TN, mentions eldest sons: William, John, David, two daughters: Jane McDaniel, and Ann Day and two younger sons: Michael and Richard, as well as four younger children: Elizabeth Byrd, Mary Byrd, James Byrd and Charles Byrd, who were still minors. He mentions wife, Elizabeth. Many of the children lived and died in Alabama which had been part of VA.
