The sons of the 3rd marriage of the 5th Baronet James Campbell are docu m e n t e d to have come to the New World, i.e. Jamaica. Michael Woods is in t h e S h e n andoah Valley as a prosperous man. He received grants for more t h a n 1 , 3 00 acres of land and purchased 2,000 acres. He helped establish a n d p a y f o r the first Presbyterian church in the Shenandoah Valley. He w a s a c l o s e neighbor of Thomas Jefferson and sold him the cherry trees w h ich w e r e p lanted at Monticello. Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe witn e sse d s e v eral documents for the Woods family. Again, testifying to the f a c t t h a t they were a prominent family in the area.
I realize that none of this is proof of lineage, but it does lend crede n c e t o t h e family tradition which has been passed down unchanged since t h e c o l o nial days that she was a descendant of nobility.
Certainly as the 3rd daughter of a 2nd marriage, there was not much in t h e w a y o f i nheritance. The parentage of her husband is not proven, but h e w a s e i t her prosperous in his own right or they were given a gift from t h e 5 t h B a ronet when Mary Ca m p b ell Woods and her brothers James and G i l b e r t all came to the New World. She died between 1742 and 1762 certai n l y p r e -deceasing her husband whose will is probated in 1762. These dat e s p l a c e her as contemporary with the children of the 1st an d 2 n d m a r r i a g es of the 5th Baronet.
Burke's is silent on their fate, but does mention that the children of t h e 3 r d m a rriage went to the Colonies. I do not find it unreasonable to a s s u m e t hat the children of the 2nd marriage did as well.
