      Liudolf (c. 805/820 - 11/12 March 866) was a Carolingian office bearer a n d c o u n t in the Duchy of Saxony from about 844. The ruling Liudolfing h o u s e , a lso known as the Ottonian dynasty, is named after him; he is its o l d e s t v erified member.

      Liudolf was the son of a margrave. Liudolf had extended possessions in t h e w e s t ern Harz foothills and on the Leine river, he also served as a m i l i t a ry leader (dux) in the wars of the East Frankish king Louis the Ge r m a n a g ainst Viking invasions, and the Polabian Slavs. Later authors ca l l e d L i udolf a Duke of the Eastern Saxons (dux Orientalis Saxonum, prob a b l y s i nce 850) and Count of Eastphalia.
