    • Richard I (28 August 932 - 20 November 996), also known as Richard the F e a r l e ss (French: Richard Sans-Peur; Old Norse: Jarl Rikard), was the co u n t o f R o uen from 942 to 996. Dudo of Saint-Quentin, whom Richard comm i s s i o ned to write the "De moribu s et actis primorum Normanniae ducum" ( L a t i n , "On the Customs and Deeds of the First Dukes of Normandy"), call e d h i m a d u x. However, this use of the word may have been in the contex t o f R i c h ard's renowned leadership in war, and not as a referenc e to a t i t l e o f n obility. Richard either introduced feudalism into Normandy or h e g r e a t ly expanded it. By the end of his reign, the most important Norm an l a n d h olders held their lands in feudal tenure.
