Eardwulf's background is obscure; his father may also have been named E a r d w u lf and may have been one of the two Eardwulfs whose deaths are rec o r d e d b y Symeon of Durham in 774 and 775. Eardwulf became king of Northumbria on 14th May 796. The Anglo-Saxon C h r o n i cle records that he was consecrated King by Eanbald I, Archbishop o f Y o r k , a nd Bishops Athelberht, Beadwulf and Hygebald, at York Minster o n 2 6 M a y 7 9 6.
