      Oswulf's date and place of birth are not known, but as ''Osulf dux'' he w i t n e s sed charters of King thelstan in 934. W h i l e ' ' Dux'' in general means a leader (especially a military one), in A n g l o - Saxon sources it's the holder of the office of ealdorman or eorl, a n d w a s u s ed to designate senior noblemen in the latter part of the eigh t h c e n t ury in Mercia and Northumbria, and from the 820s in Wessex. Medieval Lands doesn't mention Osulf's parents, wives, or children. Wik i p e d i a talks about the speculations of historians. Some think it might h a v e b e e n [[Alfred-26|Ealdred of Bamburgh (d.c.933)]], or one of Ealdred ' s r e l a tives.
