His existence appears to be derived from the word "ab". Many sources g i v e t h e n ame of Cunillon as "Cunillon ab y Blaidd Rhudd" -- Cunillon, s o n o f t h e R ed Wolf. Bartrum, however, believes that the ab was a later i n s e r t ion, and that Cunillon's name was simply "Cunillon the Red Wolf."
In that case, it is Cunillon, not his father, who is the Red Wolf, and C u n i l l on's father becomes completely unknown.

Cunillon's birth being estimated as the year 1000, place his father's b i r t h y e ar 30 years before, or 970.
===Parents===
Cunillon's father was previously linked to [[Cadell-8|Hywel Dda ap Cade l l ] ] a s h is father, Cunillon's grandfather. However, Hywel died in 948 , l o n g b e fore Cunillon's father's birth, and no sources have been found t o c o n f i rm such a relationship.
